Are you ready to awaken the hero within? Students embark on a journey of individual transformation, exploration of identity and the realisation of one's potential. Delivered in coastal and rainforest environments including Jellurgal (Burleigh Headland), Tallebudgera Creek and Palm Beach, the program combines outdoor learning adventures, challenge-by-choice experiences and place-responsive pedagogy to foster resilience, confidence, leadership and self-awareness.
The Hero's Journey is a transformative five-day residential outdoor learning program designed specifically for Year 6 students at a significant stage of personal and social development. Grounded in experiential and place-responsive pedagogies, the program supports young people to explore identity, belonging, resilience, leadership and personal growth through meaningful engagement with self, others, culture and the natural world.
Through immersive experiences in iconic natural environments, students are invited to 'awaken the hero within' as they move through a sequenced adventurous learning journey of challenge, reflection and transformation. Students engage in physical and social challenges in unique contexts integrating ocean activities, marine and freshwater explorations, bushwalking through coastal forest and volcanic remnant landscapes, wildlife interactions and collaborative problem-solving experiences.
Through engagement with First Nations custodians belonging to Yugambeh language region clans, students develop deeper understanding of the cultural, environmental and spiritual significance of Country; and First Nations ways of knowing, being, and doing. Students are supported to move beyond comfort zones through experiences that foster resilience, empathy, self-belief and stronger connections to people, place and community. The program aims to empower young people to return to their schools and communities with greater confidence, self-awareness, environmental stewardship and capacity to contribute positively to the world around them.
Outdoor Learning Curriculum Connections
Through practical and active learning in natural environments, The Hero's Journey program strengthens connections with self, others and the living world. This program enriches and extends Australian Curriculum learning through the key learning areas of Health and Physical Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science. Experiential and place-responsive learning supports the development of General Capabilities including Personal and Social Capabilities, Intercultural and Ethical Understanding, Critical and Creative Thinking, and the Cross Curriculum Priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures, and Sustainability.
