The Beach School was established in 1967 as the Tallebudgera Camp School on the National Fitness Camp site between the mouth of the Tallebudgera Creek and North Palm Beach. Today the Beach School site is a modern facility with secure and comfortable accommodation for 192 students and visiting teachers, large dining facility and a range of physical activity sites established across the site.
Queensland Recreation Centre Gold Coast owns and manages the overall site and the Tallebudgera Outdoor & Environmental Education Centre is allocated 3 accommodation buildings and 50% of the dining facilities for our visiting groups.
The Centre has access to 3 two level accommodation buildings. Each student cabin contains 3 double bunk bed, a single bed and an ensuite with a toilet and shower. Teachers and support staff leader cabins contain 2 double bunk beds and an ensuite with a toilet and shower. The layout of each level consists of 2 student cabins, an leader cabin and another 2 student cabins.
All rooms have coded door lock systems for security and a duress button in case of emergency at night. The Centre has a Security and Welfare Officer on duty through the night to respond to emergencies and to assist visiting teachers deal with any medical needs.
Our Centre is allocated one half (250 seats) of the large dining facility and buffet style meals are prepared and served by staff from a commercial catering company. Packed lunches are provided on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to maximise student time learning in the outdoors.
Physical Challenge Sites
The Gold Coast Recreation Centre has a range of physical activity sites, indoor court facilities, sporting oval and pool. Our program is designed as a learning journey where students experience the natural environments first hand. In the case of weather events preventing students from exploring the natural environment programs are modified to access some of the adventure based infrastructure on site.
Offsite Learning Facilities
The Centre accesses two external sites as part of the learning experience. Students are transported to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary to undertake the Treetops Challenge high ropes course established on the grounds of the Sanctuary.
The second site utilised is the David Fleay Wildlife Park where students explore the natural beauty of the Tallebudgera Creek and surrounding forests and mangroves on foot and by kayak as the journey to the Park and return to the Centre.
